Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura of Nasarawa State

Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura of Nasarawa State has expressed concern over the inability to pay full salaries and emoluments of teachers in the state due to shortfall in revenue allocation to the state.

Al-Makura said his worry stemmed from the pivotal roles the teachers play and the enormity of tasks they discharge in carrying out their responsibilities.

The governor made this known at a meeting with Auditors of Local Government Education Authorities (LGEAs) and their counterparts in development areas aimed at fighting inefficiency, lethargy and systemic corruption within local government administration in the state.

“Am saying this because I am really concerned about the plight of teachers. If everyone will fail to get his complete salaries it should not be teachers because they are discharging two responsibilities that no worker is saddled with.

“Apart from doing their statutory work as teachers, they are chaperons, they are caregivers and tender to our children,” he said.

He however indicted the auditors over their inability to checkmate corruption, which has crippled the local government administration in the state even as he mandated them to submit reports of all financial dealings in their respective education authorities to his office today, Monday November 28, 2016.

Al-Makura lamented that he was privy to reports from some education authorities, where for three years no member of staff died, resigned from service, retired or left service for any other reason, stressing that auditors were culpable in the corrupt act.

“Put all your records together, by Monday I would want to have comprehensive audit report of the past six months stating month by month those that were deceased, retired, those that resigned and those that left service for other reasons” he directed.
